PERIOD 5: FILM STUDIES
IN CLASS THURSDAY:
In class today, you will learn about Edwin S. Porter, The Great Train Robbery, and Continuity Editing. We will go over these elements Friday, but you should have as much knowledge as possible before then. All work today is independent and silent.
Step 1: Go through the presentation below and take notes in your binder like you would in class.
Step 2: Click on the following link to watch THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. In your notes record your observations about WHAT IS NEW and WHAT IS THE SAME comparing The Great Train Robbery to all the early films we have seen so far.
Step 3: Click on the following link to watch THE HISTORY OF CUTTING until the 11:30 mark. Don't go past that. In your notes, record what you learn about editing from the video. What were the major advancements? What is continuity editing? What helps keep continuous action in a film?
Step 4: Work on homework silently. This can be homework for my class or another.
HOMEWORK FOR FRIDAY:
1. On Piazza, post to the Note on George Melies.
2. Read and annotate the article on The Great Train Robbery you received in class. Underline important ideas. Note any thoughts you have about the reading. For funsies, here is a LINK to that Arthur episode on Edison I mentioned.
